How to Beat the Spiked Skull Rock on "Paper Mario"

The "spiked skull rocks" in "Paper Mario" for the Nintendo 64 are not rocks at all. Rather, they are powerful--for the time you meet them--enemies called "Clefts." Clefts have high defense power and are immune to jump attacks thanks to the spikes on their heads. These enemies are especially difficult early in the game because their defense of 2 will be enough to negate most of your attacks. There are a few tricks that you can use to beat them, however.

Instructions

    • 1

Use power hammer attacks. Your hammer needs to do at least three damage or more to penetrate a Cleft's defenses. When you first meet them, the only way you can do more than two damage is to use the hammer's power attack.

    • 2

Use items. Any item that delivers a specific amount of damage--such as a fire flower--will bypass the Cleft's defense completely.

    • 3

Flip them over. Items such as the POW block, and special attacks such as the Earthquake Hammer, will flip the Cleft over on its back and negate its defense completely. Use the time before they flip back over--usually two turns--to do as much damage as possible.
