How to Convert a Mechanical Speedometer to an Electronic Speedometer
A mechanical speedometer is typically found on many types of motorcycles. Converting from a mechanical speedometer to an electronic speedometer requires the use of a special conversion kit. This type of conversion is done by installing a transmission speed sensor. However, you first need to determine if your bike can accept a transmission sensor.

1
Locate the transmission cover on your motorcycle. Remove the bolt that is used to secure this cover by using a socket wrench. Remove the cover and see if there is a larger hole underneath. If a larger hole is present, then the bike can accept a transmission sensor.
-
2
Remove the two screws that are used to secure the speedometer console by using the screwdriver. Take off the console to expose the drive cable.
-
-
3
Locate the drive cable that is connected to the speedometer. Disconnect this cable. Loosen and remove the spade connectors that are used to power the speedometer illumination.
-
4
Find and disconnect the flat connector cable that is connected to the electronic harness controller and to the rear of the dash assembly.
-
5
Remove the bolts that are used to secure the mechanical speedometer drive system to the bike. Take out the mechanical speedometer drive system.
-
6
Plug the end of the cable for the speed sensor into the hole under the transmission cover. Run this cable up and around the gas tank.
-
7
Attach the speedometer included with the conversion kit into the dash assembly. Plug the white-colored connector on the pickup harness into the port on the rear of the speedometer.
-
8
Plug the ground and power connectors to the corresponding ports on the bike's wiring harness. Attach the three-pin connector to the harness of the transmission sensor.
-
9
Tighten the bolts to secure the console assembly to the bike.
