How to Tell if a Satellite Dish Is Still Running
Good satellite TV reception depends on a correctly aligned satellite dish with a functioning Low Noise Block, or LNB, unit on the dish arm. LNB devices can malfunction over time, particularly if the casing warps or cracks and allows water or moisture to damage the internal electronic components. Storms or high winds can also knock satellite dishes out of alignment. A reliable way to tell if a satellite dish is operational is to connect it to a satellite signal meter.

Climb to the satellite dish site with a ladder or raised platform.

Find the LNB device on the end of the satellite dish arm. If the LNB’s output jack on the underside or back of the device is connected to a coaxial cable down lead, disconnect the cable.

Unclasp the rubber boot from the LNB output socket and move it down the cable. Unscrew the cable connector from the output jack. Unscrew the connector by hand or, if it won't move easily, use an adjustable wrench.

Screw one end of the satellite signal meter's RG6 coaxial cable into the LNB output jack. Screw the other end into the input jack on the satellite signal meter. Switch on the signal meter.

Look at the signal meter’s display. The type of display varies depending on the type of signal meter you're using. Advanced models include a mini-TV screen that displays the output of a default satellite TV channel. Basic models use an LCD signal strength read-out, signal strength dial or LED indicator lights. If the meter shows a moderate or strong signal, the satellite dish is still running correctly. If the meter shows a weak signal or no signal, you probably need to replace the LNB unit or the entire dish.

Always read the manufacturer’s user guide and safety instructions before connecting a satellite signal meter to your dish.
Position the ladder or platform on flat, solid ground. Get a friend or neighbor to hold and steady the ladder while you check the satellite dish with the signal meter.
