How to Get a Control Knob Off a Hotpoint Washer

When replacing the washer control switch it is necessary to remove the control knob from the washer. The control knob fits over a shaft on the control, acting as a handle for the control switch as well as an indicator of cycle selection. The shaft pulls out to complete an electrical circuit and begin the washing cycle. Getting a control knob off a GE Hotpoint washer is a bit different than most brands. This is because it locks onto the shaft with a clip rather than screwing onto a threaded shaft. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Hotpoint washer power cord from the wall outlet. It is a safe practice to always disconnect power when working on appliances, to avoid accidental shocks.

    • 2

Pull the control knob outward with your fingers, just as you would when washing clothes. Look on the back of the control knob for a c-clip on the knob shaft.

    • 3

Rotate the control knob until the top of the c-clip is pointing toward you. Grab the c-clip with a pair of needle-nose pliers, and pull straight up to disengage the c-clip. Pull the control knob straight off the shaft.

Tips & Warnings

  • When reinstalling the control knob, ensure the c-clip is engaged over the small stub of the control knob. Push the control knob over the shaft on the washer until the c-clip locks over the shaft.

  • The control knob on GE Hotpoint front-load washers simply pull straight off.
