How to Make an Origami Castle

An origami castle may look simple, but it is actually one of the more advanced designs made by folding paper. It requires knowledge of Valley and Squash Folds. You'll also need experience to properly utilize creases in the paper. There are 3-D versions of a castle that are even more complex to fold and assemble. Try making this 2-D version before you attempt the more complicated version.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the paper flat on your work surface. Place it so the colored side is face up. Do a diagonal Valley Fold, bringing one bottom corner up to the diagonal top corner. Crease thoroughly and then unfold so the paper is once again flat. Repeat with the other corners. Do a Vertical Valley fold, bringing one side edge over to the other. Crease and then unfold. Do a Horizontal Valley fold, bringing one side edge over to the other. Leave the paper folded.

    • 2

Hold the folded paper with the crease at the top. Keep the paper folded in half, but open up the side enough to push on the crease until it tucks in toward the center. Repeat this action on the other side, leaving you with a triangle shape. Fold the outside bottom flaps of the triangle up toward the center. Turn the paper over and repeat. You should now have a diamond shape.

    • 3

Fold the top, outside flaps of the diamond down in half. Crease them thoroughly, then open them and do a Squash fold with the ends, creating a diamond shape. Flip over the paper and do the same thing to the other side. When you are finished with this step, you should have a triangle at the top and rectangle at the bottom.

    • 4

Fold the top flap of the left side all the way over to the right. Turn the paper over and repeat the action. Vertically fold the top left flap in half so that the edge lines up with the center of the paper. Do this with the right flap, too. Turn the paper over and do the same thing on the other side. Repeat the first part of this step, folding the left flap over the right. Turn over the paper and repeat.

    • 5

Open the bottom left corner of the paper and Squash fold the top half. This should create a white base and a colored, triangular top. Do this again for the right corner. You should now have an origami castle.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can fold several castles and put them together with glue or tape to create a larger structure.

  • It may take several tries before you can properly make Squash folds. Make sure all of your creases are done firmly so that they will be able to fold properly when you need them to.
