How to Make Rug Hooking Frame Covers

Rug-hooking frames have been used for centuries by individuals who make their own rugs. Rug hooking is considered one of the earliest American folk arts, as Colonists hooked rugs to embellish their homes. Rug-hooking frames vary in size, but it's easy to make a cover to fit your specific frame from a piece of medium-weight fabric. The ability to sew a straight stitch is the only skill necessary to complete the project. A cover can be sewn from one piece of fabric cut in the shape of a huge plus sign.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height, width and depth of the rug-hooking frame. Write the measurements down. For this example, the height is 18 inches, the width is 12 inches and the depth is 10 inches.

    • 2

Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seams. Therefore, for this example, the height becomes 20 inches, the width becomes 14 inches and the depth becomes 12 inches.

    • 3

Draw a rectangle that is 20 inches tall and 14 inches wide in the center of your fabric. Draw on the back, so marks will not show. This rectangle will be the center of a plus-sign-shaped cut-out.

    • 4

Draw two rectangle the same size as the center rectangle, one directly above it and one directly below it. This creates the vertical line in the plus sign.

    • 5

Draw two rectangles, one to the right and one to the left of the center triangle, using the height and depth dimensions. This creates the horizontal line of the plus sign. For this example, the height is 20 inches and the depth is 12 inches.

    • 6

Cut along the outside lines on the fabric. Position the plus-sign-shaped piece of fabric on a flat work surface so the front side of the fabric is up. Position the plus sign so there is a top, bottom, right and left point.

    • 7

Fold and pin the edges together to form a box. For example, fold the top edge of the left point of the plus sign up and line it up with the left side of the top leg. Pin the edge together. Repeat the process with the remaining edges until the fabric forms a box with one open side.

    • 8

Sew a 1/2-inch straight seam along each of the four pinned edges. Remove the pins as you sew.

    • 9

Turn up the raw edges around the open side of the box to form a hem, and sew it into place.

    • 10

Turn the cover right side out. Slide the cover over the frame.
