If you can crochet, you can manipulate yarn to create a variety of shapes. Crochet a heart with a lacy picot trim and use it as a Christmas ornament, a gift topper or a Valentine's Day decoration. String several together as a garland and use them to decorate your home any time of the year. You need to be able to crochet in the round in order to make a heart with edging.

Instructions

      Make 11 chain stitches with worsted weight yarn and your size US H crochet hook.

      Make three single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in each of the next three chains, then skip the next two chains. Make a single crochet in each of the next three chains, then make three single crochets all together in the final chain of the row.

      Turn your work around so you can crochet back down the opposite side of your starting chain. Make a single crochet in each of the next three chain stitches. In the chain-two space, make a single crochet, two chains and another single crochet. Make a single crochet in each of the last three chains.

      For round two, work two single crochets in each of the next three single crochet stitches. Single crochet in each of the next two single crochets, then skip the following two single crochets. Single crochet in each of the next two single crochets, then put two single crochets in each of the next three single crochets. Single crochet in each of the next four stitches, then in the chain two space make a single crochet, two chains and another single crochet. Single crochet in each of the last four stitches to finish the round.

      For round three, work two single crochets in the first single crochet, then one single crochet in the following stitch; repeat this process two more times. Single crochet in the next single crochet, skip the following two stitches and single crochet in the next two stitches. Make two single crochets in the next single crochet, then one in the following single crochet; repeat this two more times. Single crochet in each of the next four stitches. In the chain-two space, work single crochet, chain two, and another single crochet. Make a single crochet in the last five single crochets of the round.

      Add the picot edging. To do this, in every stitch around work the following stitches: slip stitch, chain three, slip stitch again. Do this all the way around and then join your last stitch to your first stitch with a slip stitch.

      Cut the working yarn with scissors, leaving a 4-inch tail. Pull this tail all the way through the final stitch to secure it, then thread the tail onto an embroidery needle and weave in the end through the stitches in the heart.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make a chain stitch, bring the yarn up and over the crochet hook from back to front (yarn over) and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook.

  • To make a single crochet, insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.

  • To make a slip stitch, insert your hook into the stitch indicated. Yarn over and draw through the stitch and the loop on your hook simultaneously.
