How to Make a Rope Mat
While you may feel that you can never have too much rope, if you keep collecting it, you may find yourself tripping over rope in your garage or work shed. When you end up with lots of extra rope crowding your storage spaces, find a new use for it instead of throwing it away. Making a rope mat reuses your rope to create a useful and decorative rug for your home.

1
Coil one end of the rope tightly around itself and glue it in place. Allow the glue to dry completely. This will be the center starting point of your mat.
-
2
Coil the rope around itself and glue it in place as you go, forming a circle. Make sure the rope is coiled tightly.

3
Cut off any excess rope when you reach the desired size of your mat. Leave 1 or 2 inches of rope at the end of your rug to finish it.
-
4
Cut the extra rope at an angle away from the mat. Glue the extra rope against the mat. The angle of the cut rope will keep you from having a “bump” at the end of your rug where the rope ends.

5
Allow the glue to dry completely. Measure the rope mat. Subtract 1/2 inch from the circumference of the rug and mark this measurement on the felt with the fabric pencil.
-
6
Cut out the felt circle; this will be the backing of your rope mat. Squeeze a spiral of hot glue onto the felt circle and press the rope mat onto the felt. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Tips & Warnings
Change the shape of your mat by coiling it into whatever shape you want. For example, coiling the rope slightly looser on two sides creates an oval mat instead of a circle. Adding corners will create a square or rectangle.
