Build a client base for steady income as a freelance photographer.

If you're a budding photographer with equipment and some training, but you can't find a job in photography at a local studio or with a publication, you don't have to give up your dream. Though it's not always stable income, freelance photography work can pay the bills, and for a lucky few, it can be lucrative. In freelance photography, you contract your work out to individuals, companies or publications. Working as a freelance photographer means you set your own hours, rate and work load. But building a client base for steady income takes a lot of work.

Instructions

Write an introduction letter explaining who you are. Include a brief explanation of your work experience, and describe your photography skills. Explain that you'd like to be considered for future freelance projects. Send the letter, with your resume and samples of your work, to the editors of local and national magazines and newspapers. When projects are available, the editor then knows you are looking for work and may contact you.

Turn an idea into reality. If you visualize a shoot, make it happen. Turn the photo shoot into a layout and send it to editors with a pitch. The pitch should include a concept of the layout and why you feel the concept is appropriate for their publication. Include information on why you are qualified to shoot the photos. Address the pitch to the editor who is directly responsible for the section of the magazine or newspaper where your photos would run; for example, if you're thinking about a shoot at a popular vacation destination, send your pitch to the travel editor.

Watch job message boards and lists to see if any publications are looking to hire freelance photographers. Actors, musicians and models may also be looking for people to shoot portfolio pieces as well. Send them your credentials and samples through email or snail mail, then follow up with a phone call to see if person you contacted is interested in your work.
