Make yo-yos from scraps of leftover fabric.

3-D fabric yo-yo’s are small circles of fabric that are gathered in the center. They are an attractive way to add your own personal touch to a homemade or store-bought purse, shirt or quilt. Fabric yo-yo’s are a perfect way to use up scraps of fabric left over from other projects. The method is the same, whether you are making small or large yo-yos; you can make a few quickly, then save them until you find the perfect project.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your circular pattern on the fabric and trace around your circle with the pencil. Use a teacup, a small plate or the lid from a round container.

    • 2

Cut out the fabric circle with your scissors.

    • 3

Lay the fabric circle flat so that the patterned side is down.

    • 4

Fold the edges of the circle in towards the center about ¼ inch.

    • 5

Thread your needle with thread that matches your fabric. Sew a running stitch around the outside edge of the fabric circle. Use 1/4-inch stitches and keep the edge of the fabric folded down.

    • 6

Pull gently on the thread after you have stitched all the way around. The yo-yo will close in on itself

    • 7

Tie a knot in your thread when the center of the yo-yo has closed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different sizes of fabric. Your final yo-yo will be about half the size of your original circle of fabric.
