DIY Toilet Cistern
Replacing a toilet cistern or tank is a simple do-it-yourself project for either experienced or novice homeowners. There are several components within the tank, but no plumbing knowledge is necessary. Replacement cisterns are available to match the size and mounting holes on your existing toilet base; some are universal and others correspond with specific models. Does this Spark an idea?

Turn off the water supply to the toilet.

Insert the bolts into the rubber washers, then through the holes at the bottom of the cistern. Place a washer and nut onto each bolt and tighten with an adjustable wrench. Insert the sponge-rubber gasket into the large hole at the bottom of the cistern.

Set the cistern on top of the toilet seat. Position the gasket in the large hole in the center of the seat. Thread the bolts through the corresponding holes on the back of the seat base. Place a washer and nut onto each protruding bolt beneath the seat and tighten.

Insert the handle through the hole in the front or side of the cistern and screw it into the lift arm. Attach the lift arm to the flapper chain.

Screw the end of the water line into the feed valve opening beneath the cistern. Turn the water supply back on and flush the toilet to check for leaks.

Know the make, model, dimensions and mounting hole measurements of the old tank when purchasing a new tank.
