How to Make a Washcloth Cake

Make a creative party decoration from a stack of washcloths.

Make a multi-tier cake from washcloths for a party centerpiece at a bridal shower, or use small baby washcloths to make miniature centerpieces or party favors for a baby shower. The decorative cakes are simple to make and can be made from any color or patterned washcloths to coordinate with the event's color scheme. Embellish each washcloth cake centerpiece with a small or large silk flower and then present the washcloths to the bride or mother-to-be at the end of the event as an extra gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a washcloth in half and then roll it up like a jellyroll. Wrap an elastic band around the center of the jellyroll.

    • 2

Fold five facecloths in half. Roll each facecloth into a jellyroll and arrange the rolls around the first with the folded edge of each facecloth facing upward. Wrap an elastic around the bunch. This is the top tier.

    • 3

Fold six washcloths in half. Roll each into a jellyroll, arrange them into the same shape as the top tier and wrap an elastic band around the rolls. This is the start of the second tier.

    • 4

Fold nine washcloths in half, roll each into a jellyroll and arrange them around the second tier to make the tier wider. Wrap an elastic band around the tier.

    • 5

Fold 15 washcloths in half, roll each into a jellyroll and arrange them into the same shape as the second tier. Wrap an elastic band around the tier. This is the start of the bottom tier.

    • 6

Fold another 15 washcloths in half, roll each into a jellyroll and arrange them around the bottom tier. Wrap an elastic band around the tier.

    • 7

Stack the second and top tier on top of the bottom tier. Wrap a length of ribbon around each tier to hide the elastic bands.

Tips & Warnings

  • To keep the washcloth cake steady, insert a wooden dowel down the center of the three tiers.

  • To make miniature washcloth cakes for party favors, use three washcloths for the top tier, five for the second and nine for the bottom tier.
