A weaver's knot allows you to join yard or thread pieces when using a frame loom.

A frame loom allows you to weave yarn or thread when making clothing and textiles. Typically square or rectangular, the loom uses pegs placed along the upper and lower sections of a frame to hold the threads that form the vertical base, called the warp threads, under tension to allow the interweaving of the horizontal weft threads. When you weave larger projects or desire color alterations, you must attach strands of new thread or yarn to the working section you have already woven into the design. A weaver's knot, also called a sheet bend knot, allows you to join the yarn or thread together, creating a secure connection that resists unraveling.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a small loop in the end of the woven yarn, called the passive end, and hold the loop in your left hand. Push the end of the new yarn, called the working end, through the loop. This process is similar to threading a needle.

    • 2

Bring the working end around beneath the two sections of the passive yarn, then bring the working end up and over each passive section.

    • 3

Pull the working end through the space created between the short section of the passive end and the working end itself.

    • 4

Tighten firmly, pulling the working yarn and the working end simultaneously until a secure knot forms.
