Wooden boxes, such as jewelry boxes, need a traditional felt lining to protect the contents. The felt must fit smoothly and snugly. With the confined space inside some boxes, installing felt can appear difficult, but you can line a box and get professional results with the right tools and materials. You can repair an antique box of any size or install felt in a box that you have built.

Step 1

Measure the inside of the box -- the bottom, sides and the lid -- with a ruler or tape measure.

Step 2

Mark the dimensions on the felt with a ruler and a pencil to ensure that the sides of the felt are square before cutting them. Cut felt pieces to the measurements with your scissors.

Step 3

Spray a short burst of adhesive on the bottom of the box, covering it lightly with the spray. Carefully lay one piece of felt in the bottom in the box. The glue stays sticky for a few minutes so you have time to adjust the felt to fit. Smooth it out with your fingers.

Step 4

Cut a piece of cardboard to fit the bottom, and use it as a shield to protect the felt that you have already installed. Spray the other side of the box and apply the another piece of felt.

Step 5

Spray and continue to apply the felt to remaining sides and the lid, using cardboard to protect the sides that you have already done.

Warning

You can remove adhesive with acetone if needed.
