How to Remove Tarnish Off Brass-Plated Lamps

You must gently remove tarnish from brass-plated lamps.

Brass is a common metal used in households. Manufacturers make brass or brass-plated beds, bathroom and kitchen hardware and lamps. Brass plate is an alloy in which a very thin layer of brass is fused to the surface of another metal. Over time, a brass-plated lamp gets tarnish, which appears as green or grey film. It’s necessary to remove tarnish gently so as not to remove the brass plate as well.

Things You'll Need

• Duster
• Bowl
• Vinegar
• Salt
• Flour
• Cotton cloths

Instructions

1. Unplug the lamp and remove the light bulb.

2. Dust the lamp to remove any surface dust or dirt.

3. Mix ½ cup vinegar with 1 tbs. salt in a bowl. Add enough flour to create a thick paste.

4. Dip a cotton cloth into the paste and apply to tarnish on the lamp.

5. Keep the paste on the lamp for 10 minutes.

6. Wet a cloth and wipe off the paste. Rinse the cloth and repeat until you remove all paste.

7. Dry lamp with a cloth. Then rub lamp until the brass plate shines.
