How to Remove Paint From Chrome Using Steel Wool

One way to remove paint from chrome is with fine steel wool.

Chrome is a lustrous metal used to make cars, trucks, bathroom and kitchen hardware. When painting a vehicle or a room, paint may fall onto the chrome. While there are paint thinners and paint removers available to clean paint stains, steel wool is also effective. The only caveat is to be gentle. You can scratch chrome with steel wool.

Things You'll Need

• Steel wool (#0000 grade)
• Chrome polish
• Cloths

Instructions

1. Wet a #0000 grade steel wool pad with water. A moist steel wool pad is softer and less likely to leave scratches on the chrome..

2. Scrub with the pad in circular motions. Continue scrubbing until you remove the paint.

3. Wipe the chrome with a clean cloth.

4. Apply a small amount of chrome polish to the chrome with a cloth.

5. Rub the polish into the chrome for a high gloss shine. Polishing chrome removes any scratches.

Tips & Warnings

• Another option is to apply a little paint thinner or pain remover to the chrome before using the steel wool pad.

• Scrub the chrome gently with the steel wool to reduce the amount of scratches.
