Some sonographers specialize in neonatal neurosonography.

A neurosonographer is a specialist focusing on diagnosing health problems in the nervous system and the brain. Neurosonography is a highly specialized field of sonography. In neonatal care, a neurosonographer studies and diagnoses neurological and nervous system disorders in premature infants. There are a number of ways through which you can become a neurosonographer.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete high school with good grades in mathematics, science and health. Apply for a job in a hospital. Many hospitals offer on-the-job training by a senior neurosonographer or a physician. But usually, they pick candidates already in the field, such as nursing aides. You can get an entry-level job that only requires a high school diploma and work your way up to become a neurosonographer through on the job training.

    • 2

Enlist for training whenever there is an opportunity if you work for a healthcare facility. Many hospitals conduct on the job training but candidates are usually people within the health industry. The program must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). You will be trained how to specialize in the nervous system using medical imaging to diagnose neurological disorders either for adult patients or infants.

    • 3

Find a vocational institution accredited by CAAHEP offering a program in neurosonography. Many such institutions offer one year certificate programs which are accepted as proper education by employers. These programs are usually good for employees already in the healthcare field seeking career advancement through further training.

    • 4

Study a bachelor's degree in sonography to give yourself a better shot at getting the best job opportunities in the field. You can also enter an associate degree program at a junior or community college. There are many associate and bachelor degree programs accredited by CAAHEP. Some students transfer to a four-year program after completing an associate degree program in sonography.

    • 5

Register with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) once you complete your trying. You have to pass an exam offered by ARDMS to become a RDMS. Registration isn't mandatory but many employers consider it an indication you have received proper training, education or work experience. When registered, you become a credentialed neurosonographer.
