How to Build a Peanut Feeder

Peanuts attract birds such as woodpeckers, titmice and chickadees to a backyard feeder. A simple tube feeder made of wire mesh provides a storage area for the peanuts. The birds grasp the wire mesh in their claws while feeding. This type of feeder hangs from a handy branch or other support in the backyard. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut piece of 1/4-inch hardware cloth, which is a wire mesh with 1/4-inch openings, to a 12-inch-by-12-inch size.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of wood with 3 1/2 inch diameters and two pieces with 5-inch diameters out of a 1-by-6-inch pine board. Use a jigsaw or band saw to make the cuts.

    • 3

Place flat sides together of one smaller round piece and a larger round piece. Screw a 1 1/4-inch wood screw through the center to secure the pieces together. Make two of these components.

    • 4

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the center of the flat side of each piece.

    • 5

Wrap the hardware cloth around the smaller segments of the wood pieces. Fasten the edges of the hardware cloth together using light, bendable wire. Fasten the hardware cloth tube to one of the round wood pieces using small nails or screws.

    • 6

Poke a piece of light wire through the hole on the loose piece of wood, down through the hardware cloth tube and through the hole in the round wood component fastened to the bottom of the tube. Bend the wire around a nail or screw to prevent it from pulling through the hole at the bottom of the feeder.

    • 7

Make a loop in the other end of the wire above the loose round wood component for hanging the feeder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place the feeder in the backyard where it is visible from a home window. By sliding the top loose round wood component up the wire, you can open the feeder for filling. Slide the wood piece down the wire and into the top of the tube when the feeder is in use.
