Instructions

Choose the exact placement of your map, such as directly above your bed or in the middle of the wall. If your map is framed, incorporate the colors of the frame throughout other aspects of the room. As an example, for a bedroom, choose to decorate with furniture that is of the same texture and finish as the frame around the map.

Draw an entire mural around the map with a theme behind it. For instance, if you like pirate themes, an ideal image to complement the vintage theme is to draw a pirate ship on a journey toward the map at the other end of the wall. Use your creativity to draw and paint the background, such as an ocean or a beach. This is especially ideal if you have installed a pull-down map, because you can always let the map up to show off the artistic mural behind it.

Keep the décor simple around the map. Paint the background a neutral color, such as tan. To enhance the vintage aspect of the wall, paint or draw cracks on top of the tan paint. This results in a wall that looks like a crumpled piece of paper, which blends well with the antique map.

Add rustic accessories around the map. For instance, if you have windows on the same wall, install bamboo Roman shades, which have a natural appearance that can be incorporated in a vintage theme. Other accessories to use when decorating include antique lanterns, a compass and a magnifying glass. Choose items that complement the theme you are striving for.
