How to Run ANOVA in SPSS

SPSS is a statistical analysis program that can perform a wide range of complex data analysis procedures, including an Analysis of Variance, or ANOVA. An ANOVA is used to determine whether the differences in the means of three or more sets of data are statistically significant. Although the process may be a little daunting at first, it is a fairly simple analysis to conduct and interpret, once you have tried it a few times.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure your data is organized appropriately in SPSS. Each row should exclusively represent one participant, and each column a separate variable.

    • 2

Add a grouping variable if you have not done so already. Click the “Variable” tab on the bottom left and add a variable called “Group” into an empty row. Then click the “Data” tab, and give each participant a number based on the group he belongs to.

    • 3

Click “Analyze” from the main bar at the top of the screen, then “Compare Means,” then “One-Way ANOVA.”

    • 4

Click “Group” from the list of variables on the left, then click the arrow next to the “Factor” box. The variable will move across, into that box. Click the name of your dependent variable from the list on the left – that is, the variable for which you want to see if there is a difference between groups. Then click the arrow next to “Dependent List.”

    • 5

Click “Options.” A new window will appear, which allows you to customize the output of the ANOVA. Click “Descriptives,” as gives you a number of useful statistics including the means, standard deviations, standard errors, ranges and confidence intervals for each group. Check the conventions of the publication or class you are submitting your analysis to, so you know which of these to report. Select the “Means Plot” check box if you want to see a graph of your results. Click “Continue” when done.

    • 6

Click “OK” to run the analysis. This may take a few moments depending on the speed of your computer and the amount of data you are analyzing. When the anaysis is complete, the results will appear in the “Output” SPSS window. If you do not have an Output screen, one will be made for you automatically.

Tips & Warnings

  • SPSS is now called PASW, although older versions of the software package retain the SPSS name.
