How to Get an Emo Hairstyle for Girls Without Teasing Your Hair

For sculpting emo hairstyles, you might have seen or heard of people teasing their hair in order to achieve the emo look. Teasing is back-combing the hair in order to achieve volume. This technique is effective, yet can be harmful to your hair over time, as combing forcefully up the roots can make your hair weak and snap, and can also cause bald spots. There are other ways to achieve the emo look without teasing.

Things You'll Need

• Hair serum
• Volumizing mousse/root lifter
• Comb
• Round brush
• Hair dryer
• Straightening iron
• Hair spray
• Hair-holding wax

Instructions

1. Work with clean hair. Start styling immediately after the shower with wet hair. Use a protective hair serum to prevent heat damage. Add volumizing mousse or root lifter spray to your hair. Flip your head and blow-dry upside down, which will add extra volume once your hair dries.

2. Comb your hair into a deep side part. Apply a straightening iron to the bottom layer of your hair. Straighten the top layers and hold it out until the hair cools. Use a round brush to round out the top layers. Apply hair spray to the roots for a finishing touch.

3. Use a good hair wax or gel for spiked hair. Work with wet, clean hair. Be generous with the hair wax, but not too much, lest it should look dirty and weighed down. Blow dry. Use a strong holding spray.

4. Style fringe bangs so that it lays over part of your face, preferably over your eye. Depending on your hair, you might have to straighten out your bangs. Try an anti-frizz product to tame unruly bangs if necessary.

• Cute bows as clip-ons can be good hair accessories for fringe bangs.

• Spiky emo cuts are good for short hair, but might fall flat for longer hair. More hair product is required to hold this style up for those with longer hair.

• Add highlights or streaks to hair, or consider dying your entire hair. Black is generally a popular color for emo, as well as red, purple and pink highlights.
