How to Build a Wine Glass Hanger
A wine glass hanger holds your wine glasses upside down, keeping them safe and the interiors free of dust while they’re not in use. In about an hour, you can build a homemade wine glass hanger for use in a cabinet or to put on display with inexpensive PVC pipes and common tools. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Vise
- 4-inch diameter PVC pipe
- ½-inch diameter PVC pipe
- Hacksaw
- Sandpaper, medium grit
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Wall anchors
- 2 screws, 4-inch size
- 2 plastic expansion anchors (optional)
- Screwdriver
Instructions
-
-
1
Secure the larger piece of pipe in a vise and cut a 1-foot section with a hacksaw. Cut two sections, 1 inch each, of the smaller PVC pipe in the same manner.
-
2
Sand the cut edges of the pipes to eliminate rough edges.
-
-
3
Draw two straight, parallel lines with a ruler and pencil down the length of the larger PVC pipe so that the lines sit approximately 3/8 inch apart. Secure the pipe in a vise with the lines facing up.
-
4
Saw through the PVC pipe along the lines to make a gap. Sand the cut edges to eliminate roughness.
-
5
Measure and mark two screw placements on the pipe directly opposite the gap. Make each placement 3 inches away from each end of the pipe.
-
6
Secure the pipe in a vice with the screw placements facing up. Drill holes through the markings to make screw holes.
-
7
Locate a stud in the ceiling, using a stud finder. Solid studs make stronger, better anchors than hollow drywall. If you can't find studs in your ceiling or prefer to hang the glass holder elsewhere, you can use expansion anchors to add more grab. Expansion anchors fit over screws and can hold up to 10 pounds when placed in hollow drywall.
-
8
Pre-drill two holes in the ceiling or other location where you want to mount the hanger. The holes should be 6 inches apart to correspond to the screw holes in the hanger. If you are using expansion anchors, slide them into the drilled holes before adding the screws. The anchors will expand when you screw into them.
-
9
Thread screws through the holes in the PVC pipe from the inside out.
-
10
Slip the small PVC pipe pieces over the screw extensions to conceal them.
-
11
Attach the hanger to the ceiling using the screwdriver where you pre-drilled the holes. Slide the screwdriver into the slot you cut earlier to access the screws from below.

Tips & Warnings
This project is designed for use with standard-size wine glasses. You can use a different size of PVC pipe and cut a narrower or wider slot to customize this project for odd-sized glasses.
