How to Get Your Dojo Accredited

How to Get Your Dojo Accredited thumbnail
A reputable, accredited dojo will help attract more business.

As a dojo owner, it is important to understand that you are a business. Like any business, you have the option to seek accreditation. Many martial arts enthusiasts are wary about the dojos they choose simply because they fear being scammed. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) provides accreditation to businesses that deserve it. Accreditation conclusively establishes your dojo as reputable, trustworthy and honest. Most importantly, you will obtain proof of accreditation in writing that you can proudly display to potential martial arts students and clients.

Instructions

    • 1

Become established. In order to be considered for Better Business Bureau accreditation, your dojo is required to operate for at least one year. If there are any special licenses or licensing requirements for your dojo, meet those as well.

    • 2

Maintain a clean history. Avoid any conduct that results in government interference or violates Better Business Bureau standards. Also, ensure that your dojo maintains a minimum of "B" standing, according to the Bureau. Do not involve your business in any activity that violates the BBB or affects its reputation.

    • 3

Advertise properly. Adhere to all federal and state laws regarding ethics and advertising. Most importantly, do not engage in false or misleading advertising about your products, services, qualifications or other aspects of your business.

    • 4

Provide clear information. Present any information or agreements in writing, and keep those documents readily available. This documentation can include things like contracts, policies, guarantees, fees, contracts, and anything else that will bind a customer or influence her decision to join the dojo. Additionally, the BBB requires that your dojo provide customers with proper contact information, such as phone and e-mail, for your business.

    • 5

Stand by your word. Follow and fulfill any contracts that you provide, and correct mistakes quickly if they arise. Quickly and professionally deal with any complaints, and provide evidence of your professional conduct to the BBB if required. Fully abide by any decisions or legal settlements with the BBB or other customers.

    • 6

Protect privacy. Important information like credit cards, bank accounts, social security numbers, and any other sensitive information must be kept secret and inaccessible to unauthorized parties. Also, ask your clients how they prefer to be contacted and adhere to that preference.

    • 7

Fill out the application. This process is done specifically online. Go to the Better Business Bureau website at www.bbb.org. Type your city, state or zip code in the small box that appears. Click "Go" to be taken to the main website.

    • 8

Click the "For Businesses" link at the top left of the page. The next page will display a variety of links. Select "Apply for BBB Accreditation."

    • 9

Scroll down until you see the online form. Type the requested information in the corresponding text boxes and click "Submit." Your application is now submitted. The BBB will review it and make its decision.
