How to Create a Press Kit for a Start Up Company
Whether your business is a start-up or existing one, you need to grab the attention of potential customers and the media. Creating a press kit is one way to achieve this goal. A press kit, also called a media kit, is a packet of promotional material about your company. It’s your start-up company’s first impression and possible leg up on your competitors. Putting together a press kit can seem daunting since so much weight is placed on getting it right. The last thing you want is to create a media kit that a journalist can’t understand.
Instructions

-
1
Write a letter of introduction. The letter describes your start-up business and the products you sell. Include contact information.
-
2
Provide your business’ history. A corporate history sheet includes basic information about the history -- including company founders and a timeline of events.
-
-
3
Write a fact sheet. A fact sheet consists of one sheet of facts about your start-up business. This includes frequently asked questions about the company, products you sell, target audience and company history.
-
4
Print out any press coverage. You want to include any positive press coverage you’ve received. If you don’t have any, you can include press releases and credential-setting articles that your owners wrote.
-
5
Select photographs or images. You need a high-quality video talking about the company. Also provides pictures of your products.
-
6
Print out the press kit. Make copies of the originals and place them in a folder with your business logo on it. This is your hardcopy press kit that you can take to tradeshows and conferences and give to the media.
-
7
Scan documents onto a flash memory drive. Keep copies of your press kit on USB thumb drives you can give to journalists. Make as many copies as you think you'll need.
-
8
Create an electronic press kit, or EPK. Upload your press kit to your start-up company’s website. An EPK provides easy access for journalists because they can view and download the kit from your website.

Tips & Warnings
Remember to provide the basics in a press kit. You want to include short, concise company information. This requires you to think like a journalist and provide the who, what, when, where, why and how about your start-up.
You may want to include brief biographical information about company founders. Keep the information brief. Provide relevant, interesting facts that emphasize your company.
Don’t overwhelm journalists by including every article written about the company or founders. Select only the best or most informative articles.
