How to Join a Flash Mob in Raleigh
The capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, provides many creative outlets; from the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team to the North Carolina museums of art and history. When you prefer something much more unplanned, however, and enjoy the company of hundreds or thousands of strangers, a Raleigh flash mob may prove ideal. Flash mobs are seemingly random happenings that spring up quickly, involve participants doing strange acts such as dancing or wearing clothes backward, then disappear just as quickly as they occur. Finding a flash mob in the City of Acorns can be difficult, but the result may prove reward enough.

1
Seek out a Raleigh flash mob community group on a website such as Meetup.com. Type your zip code, such as “27612” into the “City or ZIP/postal code” box. Type “Flash mob” into the “Topic or interest” text box and click “Search.” Click “Join Now” if any groups exist — a Meetup.com membership, which is free, is required — or click the “Get on the list” link to receive alerts when flash mob Meetups are created.

2
Check the Independent Weekly, a free arts, culture and social weekly news magazine distributed throughout Raleigh and the surrounding areas. While flash mobs happen instantly, the Indy’s classified section and back pages are the ideal place for flash mob creators to recruit for their mailing lists. You can also search the Indy’s free classified section online.

Take advantage of your online connections to search for Raleigh flash mobs on social networking sites such as Facebook. You’ll need a Facebook account with public settings and may require approval from the flash mob owner.

Join groups at your college, where applicable, or in your community. Organizations such as fraternities and sororities, social clubs and sports groups may put on their own flash mobs, and your membership keeps you in the know. Although college campuses are often the site of flash mobs, such as North Carolina State University’s 3,500-person flash mob in May 2010, you usually don't need to be a college student to join in the fun.

5
Give the flash mob coordinator your current cell phone number or email address and make sure to update this person with any changes. Keep the phone with you and turned to vibrate — so you don’t disturb anyone when it goes off — and accept any email invitations or click-through questionnaires required for mob group entry.

Tips & Warnings
Once you’ve actually joined the flash mob group, keep a mobile device with you and turned on at all times. Flash mobs happen extremely quickly and you don’t want to miss out once you’ve gotten in. Check your social networking page for messages or keep up with your text/email plans so you're ready to “flash” at any time.
