How to Plant a Cushion Chrysanthemum
Cushion chrysanthemums form neat, tight mounds that laden heavily with flowers in the fall. Usually growing no more than 2 feet tall, they produce a wide variety of flower types, ranging from simple daisies to frilly pompoms, blooming in every color except blue. You can purchase large pots of cushion mums in fall, but small pots planted in spring are more cost-effective and will bloom the first year. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil.
-
2
Work compost into the bed if you need to improve the fertility or drainage. Apply the compost to the surface of the soil and turn the soil with the shovel. Smooth the surface with a garden rake before planting.

-
3
Dig a hole with a hand trowel. Carefully remove the plant from its pot and place it in the hole to sit at the same depth as it was in the container.
-
4
Fill in around the sides of the hole with soil and press gently with your hands to firm it up.
-
5
Plant cushion mums 18 inches apart or follow the spacing recommendations on the plant tag.
-
6
Water slowly and thoroughly. Stop watering when the water is no longer absorbed into the soil.
-
7
Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch to help the soil retain moisture.
