Instructions

    • 1

Place an oblong watermelon on a flat solid surface. Cut through the watermelon in a horizontal plane lengthwise from the end, stopping just past the halfway point.

    • 2

Cut downward from the top so you can remove the top piece. Remove the fruit from this chunk and shape the rind into a plow, or shovel, to place at the front of the truck. Set the rind aside for later attachment.

    • 3

Hollow out the remaining watermelon using a melon baller or spoon. Collect the fruit that is removed and place it to the side in a bowl.

    • 4

Use a fine-point, waterproof marker to draw a windshield and windows on the end of the watermelon where the rind is still intact. Cut out the windshield and windows with a knife.

    • 5

Secure grape headlights to the front of the truck with toothpicks. Attach round lemon slices as wheels by inserting toothpicks through the centers of the slices. Attach the shovel-shaped rind to the front of the truck with toothpicks. Add fruit balls back into the finished truck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.

  • Cut the watermelon when it is at room temperature.

  • To prevent the watermellon from rolling around while you are carving it and to absorb the juice, lay a heavy towel on the countertop and place the watermelon on the towel.

  • Use a sharp knife.
