How to Make a Plush Ball

A stuffed ball is an easy and charming toy to make at home. Using colorful felt pieces, you can hand-sew a stuffed ball that makes the perfect gift for a small child. The toy can even be customized so that the colors are just right for the child who'll receive it. You can also make the dimensions of the panel pieces larger or smaller, depending on what size you want the ball to be.

Things You'll Need

  • Card stock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Felt in various colors
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Stuffing
  • Draw a leaf shape onto a piece of card stock or manila folder, making a template for the panels of the ball. The shape should be about 10 inches tall and 5 inches wide and come to a point at both the top and the bottom.

  • Cut out the shape, making a stencil for the panels of the ball.

  • Trace the shape onto six sheets of different-colored felt. Cut out each traced shape, making six fabric panel pieces.

  • Sew two of the pieces together along one side, so the pieces are attached from the top point to the bottom point along one edge.

  • Repeat Step 4 with all the pieces until they are all connected at the sides, making a ball shape because of the curved lines. Leave one edge unsewn so you have a slit through which to stuff the ball.

  • Stuff the ball with batting or stuffing from a craft store, then sew the last edge together, completing the ball.
