How to Knit a T-Shirt

Traditionally, T-shirts are made of cotton material. You can, however, knit a sweater that looks like a T-shirt using yarn. A knitted T-shirt is similar to a cotton one because it is designed to fit loosely on a child. Thus, you can pull it on and off whenever he becomes too warm.

    Sleeves

    • 5

    • 6

Continue to knit the pattern for four more rows. Knit one row and purl one row. Bind off stitches as if to purl or bind off on the purl row.

    • 7

Repeat the same for the other sleeve.

    • 8

Sew the shoulder seams with a tapestry needle leaving a 7-inch opening for the neck. With right side together sew the underarm and side sleeves as one continuous seam.

    • 9

Create a cuff on the bottom of the sweater sleeve by picking up and knitting stitches around the sleeve. Knit one stitch, purl one stitch for eight rows and bind off.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can make changes to the neck line by picking up 60 stitches along the neck opening with a 16-inch No. 6 or 7 circular needle. Knit one stitch, purl one stitch around the neck opening for six rows and bind off in purl. To pick up stitches, attach yarn to the neck opening and insert the needle in the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit a stitch and pull the new stitch through right side of neck opening.

  • You can knit the T-shirt sweater in the round using circular needles. Work the front and back of the body by casting on double the number of stitches on your circular needles. Knit in the round until you reach the underarms. However, you have to knit both sleeves with the straight needles.
