DIY Cast Bushings

Making a craft model of a cast bushing is a creative way to express your passion for visual art. Real cast bushings are round, hollow devices used with motor pistons to prevent excessive vibration. A bushing is often cast in bronze to smooth the surface and protect it from corrosion. A craft version of a cast bushing is ideal for a school project design example or as a prop for a stage play.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a flat, 1 1/2-by-3-inch piece of shipping box cardboard with one layer of masking tape. The tape provides a smooth edge for the craft bushing.

    • 2

Form the cardboard into the shape of a 1 1/2-by-1 1/2-inch cylinder. Bond the vertical edges with permanent epoxy to secure the shape of the cylinder.

    • 3

Wrap and bond a 1/8-by-1 1/2-by-3-inch piece of polyethylene plastic around the body of the cylinder with permanent epoxy. Spray paint the entire craft model bushing with metallic bronze spray paint. Allow two hours for the craft to dry before handling or displaying.
