How to Operate a Strap Hoist
Strap hoists are hoists designed to lift heavy equipment at construction sites or any other place where it is is necessary to lift over 500 to 2,000 lbs. Operating a strap hoist is a simple process that varies little between the various brands and types. However, it is always important to use the proper hoist. Never lift a load that is heavier than your hoist’s suggested load. It will strain the hoist, cause damage and may even cause it to break in the middle of a load.

1
Inspect the straps on the hoist for any frays or breaks in the hoist. Never use a hoist that has even minor frays as the excessive weight in your loads may cause it to snap.
-
2
Push the small metal bar on the top hook back, and place the top hook over the wire, rope or bar that will hold it. Let go of the metal bar to snap it into place, and hold the hoist in position.

3
Adjust the hoist that it is running up and down with no sliding to the left or right. Make sure it is in the position to avoid accidents. Clear the area of people to avoid causing injury if the hoist fails.
-
4
Put the shift lever into the down position. Pull the rope with the hook at the bottom downward to stretch it towards the object you are going to lift. Hook the object with the metal hook. Pull it upward to make sure the hook stays in place.
-
5
Move the shift lever to the up position. Rotate the hand wheel clockwise to pull up the slack in the line. Pull the slack up until the line is taut.
-
6
Crank the handle up and down in slow, even strokes to lift the load. Never use excessive force when cranking the handle. You may have overloaded it if you can't easily lift it with simple strokes.
-
7
Switch the shift lever back into the down position to begin lowering a load. Move the handle to slowly lower the load to the ground. Wait until it is on the ground, and move the release lever to loosen your line.
