How to Install a Sewer Meter

A subtraction meter is used to monitor the amount of water that does not enter the city's sewer system. The water that is from the subtraction meter is subtracted from the main meter when your utility or water bill is calculated. You can install a subtraction meter as a second water meter for your home. To do this you need to install this meter downstream from your main water meter. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Have the utility company mark the ground for any gas lines that are present. The location for a water line should also be marked.

    • 2

Locate the meter well for the Knoxville Utilities Board meter. Dig up the ground at this area with the shovel. You will see a copper pipe that is attached to a PEX tube, which is cross-linked polyethylene.

    • 3

Cut the PEX tubing with a utility knife and install a T- split, which is a type of tee fitting for plumbing lines. Attach each end of the PEX tubing onto the T-split.

    • 4

Dig a small trench 8 to 10 inches deep from this location to your house foundation. Attach one end of the subtraction meter to the fitting on the T-split. Tighten the fitting with the adjustable wrench.

    • 5

Attach a length of PEX tubing to the other end of the meter. Run the PEX tubing along the trench to the foundation of your house.

    • 6

Install a reduced pressure backflow valve to the PEX tubing and a second water line. A backflow valve will need to be placed at least 12 inches above the ground.

    • 7

Place a valve box or a meter well at the location of the subtraction meter in the ground. This is to allow easy access to the meter.

    • 8

Backfill the trench with dirt to cover the PEX tubing. Contact your city or municipality to inspect your subtraction meter installation.
