How to Make a Taiko Drum From a Tire
Japanese taiko drum shells were traditionally made from a single barrel-shaped carved piece of Japanese oak, with a head of rawhide. In more recent years, western taiko drumming groups use drums made out of wine barrels. These expressive drums can be quite costly. However, you can make an inexpensive yet effective taiko drum from an old car tire. Making taiko tire drums allows many drummers to practice in a group rather than having individuals drummers wait for the traditional and expensive drum to become available. It is also a great way to start a child's interest in taiko drumming.
Instructions

1
Lay the tire flat on the ground.
-
2
Tape the tire in a wheel-spoke pattern. Tape a plus sign with 2 strips of tape over the center hole of the tire. Cross it diagonally with a third piece of tape, extending it across and all the way down to the bottom of the tire to keep the tape in place.
-
-
3
Cover the center of the tire completely with strips of tape laid out in a wheel-spoke pattern. For example, stretch the first strip of tape from the 3 o'clock position to the 9 o'clock position, then a new strip of tape from 4 o'clock to 10 o'clock and so on.
-
4
Tape a second layer of packing tape with each strip stretched side-by-side across the center of the tire. Again, extend all the way down to the bottom of the tire to keep the tape in place.
-
5
Tape duct tape around the tread of the tire, over the ends of the packing tape to secure the packing tape.
