How to Maintain Body Language in Business
Whether applying for a new position, moving up in the ranks at your current job or trying to impress your college professors, maintaining a professional look through the use of body language is key to success. Although many people understand the importance of body language, they're highly ineffective at consistently applying even the most basic body language concepts. Learning how to use body language on a daily basis can help ensure professional success.

1
Practice good posture. If you have a habit of slouching, maintaining good posture won't come easily to you. Stand up straight with your shoulders back, back straight, and head up. This may even feel unnatural at first. Practice correct posture by standing in front of a mirror. This will train your body and mind to realize that the position is correct, despite how awkward it feels.

2
Maintain eye contact with everyone as you speak, even in informal settings. Eye contact is one of the most important aspects of body language because when someone cannot look you in the eye, they perceive you as either self-conscious or dishonest. If you're shy, practice maintaining eye contact with close family members or friends before applying the skill in more public situations.

Cross your legs at the ankles and keep your legs together in professional settings, no matter how tired or bored you become. Keep your elbows off the desk or meeting room table. Keep your back straight in your chair, especially in a meeting, to give the impression that you're interested in and engaged with the information being presented.

Relax your hands when you speak. People often use their hands too much when communicating. This habit can be distracting and take away from the message you're trying to convey. Practice keeping your hands at your sides when you speak. Maintain relaxed hands while watching yourself in the mirror. This will teach you how it looks when you don't let your hands do all the talking.
