How to Change a Diverter Cartridge on a Bathtub

The diverter cartridge in your bathtub faucet controls the flow of the water in the shower or tub. Today, on most single-handle faucets, this diverter cartridge is inside the handle of the faucet. On some older, three-handle models, the cartridge is inside a separate handle. Either way, the steps to replace and repair the cartridge are very similar. You will need about 20 minutes to complete this task if you have some experience. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water to the tub by shutting the home's main water line.

    • 2

Unscrew the tub's handle screw, which is underneath the handle on single-handle tubs or on top of the handle on tubs with three handles. If your faucet has a temperature control knob, pry the cap off with a screwdriver. Pull the handle off the faucet after the screw is removed.

    • 3

Unscrew the trim sleeve and remove it. Unscrew the bonnet nut (also called a retaining nut) on top of the cartridge with a wrench. On three-handle models, turn the entire cartridge to unscrew it.

    • 4

Slide the cartridge out of the faucet and replace it with a new one of the same kind from a hardware store. Replace the trim sleeve, bonnet nut or retaining nut and handle.

    • 5

Tighten the handle set screw and turn on the water.
