How Do I Lend Books with an Amazon Kindle Account?

When you purchase a book for your Kindle account or your Kindle e-reader, you have the option to lend certain books to other Kindle users. As long as the publisher has agreed to allow owners to lend the book, you can allow someone else to read the book using the Kindle e-reader, or even using just the Kindle application on a PC or smartphone, for up to 14 days. Lending e-books is done through your Kindle account on the Amazon website.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Amazon home page at amazon.com. If you are not automatically signed in to your account, click "Sign in" at the top of the page, enter your email address and password, then click "Sign in."

    • 2

Click "Your Digital Items," located on the right side of the top of the web page. Once that page loads, click "Manage Your Kindle" under the "Kindle" heading. A list of all your Kindle books will appear on the screen.

    • 3

Locate the title that you want to lend and click on the "Actions" button to the right of that title. Choose "Loan this title" from the small popup menu that appears.

    • 4

Enter the recipient's email address, the recipient's name, your name and a personal message, if desired, into the fields on the "Loan this book" page. Click the "Send now" button to loan the book.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will not be able to read a book you have loaned out until the 14 days have passed and your access to the book is restored.

  • A book's rights holder will determine whether the book is able to be loaned out. Any book that you cannot loan will not have the "Loan this title" option under the "Actions" menu.

  • The recipient will get an email about the loaned book, and will need to click the "Get your loaned book now" button in the email to access the book.
