How to Be a Self Taught Illustrator

Not all successful artists and illustrators went to art school. Some are in the category "self-taught." This simply means that they worked and practiced for years to hone their skills. Self-taught illustrators may not take classes, but they do look at the artwork and illustrations of others, and they may network and socialize with other illustrators and artists.

Practice what you love to do. If you love to draw, draw often. If you love to manipulate photos, spend all of your free time doing that. Practicing hones your illustrating skills.

    • 2

Keep everything you draw or illustrate in a portfolio. Keep not only things that you are proud of, but keep things that did not turn out the way you wanted. Go through your portfolio now and then. You will see how your work has developed and improved over time. Consider working on old illustrations again.

    • 3

Share your portfolio with others as often as you can. Somebody may see your portfolio and know of a possible job for you as an illustrator.

    • 4

Market your work. Submit copies of your illustrations to potential employers. Consider setting up a website or blog on which you may upload examples of your work. Direct people to your website. Include information about how to get in touch with you so people can inquire about hiring you to work as an illustrator.

Look at other illustrations and artwork. Perusing the work of others sometimes inspires illustrators and other artists with new techniques and ideas .
