How to Give Depth to Text in Illustrator

Make text 3-D with Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator, currently in version CS5, gives you the ability to use vector graphics to create beautiful 3-D effects, extruding, revolving and rotating shapes to take any 2-D graphic and add depth. The process takes just minutes, and any text object can become three-dimensional. You can rotate the text and change the angle of the extrusion in order to change the effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Type your text into a new canvas in Illustrator. You can do the extrusion process one letter at a time, one word at a time, or with as much text as you want.

    • 2

Click "Effects" > "3D" > "Extrude and Bevel." This opens up an options panel where you can refine the effect.

    • 3

Check the "Preview" box on the right-hand side so that you can see the effect and adjust it as desired.

    • 4

Grab the cube in the preview window and drag it right or left, up or down. This will change the angle and revolve the text object to the extent you like.

    • 5

Change the depth of the extrusion in the "Extrude Depth" box in the middle of the options panel. Adjust the depth as desired.
