If you are a skilled computer programmer, your technical knowledge can prove to be an important asset to a number of people and organizations. For this reason, even if you currently have a full-time programming job, you may be able to find a considerable amount of lucrative work on the side.

1. Purchase a personalized web domain and create a professional website there. Place information from your resume on the site and upload projects that visitors can view. For instance, if you have created any computer games that are playable in a browser, make these available on your website. However, make sure that you do not infringe on any of the rights of your current or former employers by sharing such works.

2. Start a professional blog on your domain. Build your professional image by writing entries that deal with issues specific to programming. Place information on your blog about how to reach you for freelance work.

3. Create accounts on websites that stand as intermediaries between freelancers and clients. Do this by entering your contact information and proceeding through whatever steps that website requires for freelancers to accept jobs. Some such websites are free, while others require a fee. These fees may come in the form of flat subscription payments or a percentage of money made on work performed. Search these websites for programming jobs that meet your skills.

4. Create business cards. Various Internet-based companies offer easy-to-use business card templates and allow you to order them by the hundreds. Include your name, your contact information, a brief description of the services you offer and a memorable tagline.

5. Attend trade shows for industries that frequently need help from programmers with your particular expertise. Hand out business cards to potential clients and get business cards from them. Keep these cards to maintain contact and drum up business in the future.
