How to Become a Conservator of the Peace in Illinois

A conservator of peace in the state of Illinois is someone who is legally authorized to arrest, question, and detain a person or a group of persons who break the peace, or who are found violating any municipal ordinance or any criminal law of the state. Also referred to as peace officers, the certified conservators of peace have legal privileges to maintain peace within their designated jurisdiction.

      Become a full-time employee of the Illinois police department. An individual must be a mayor, aldermen, president, trustee, marshal, deputy marshal, a policeman or a full-time employee at the Illinois city police or a county sheriff's department before proceeding to become the conservator of peace.

      Enroll in the Illinois law enforcement basic training program. The program is offered by several certified training academies across the state, including the Chicago police academy and the Illinois state police academy. Prerequisites for enrollment include a medical certificate of health and fitness, a criminal background check, and a letter of approval from the law enforcement department that employs you. You also have to take a physical power test, a series of physical drills demonstrating the required level of physical fitness. Policemen who have had a basic training program previously can request a waiver.

      Complete the training. The basic law enforcement training for a conservator of peace is a 12-week, 480-hour program. The training includes physical, firearm, vehicle code and first responder training, in addition to criminal offenses, civil rights and civil liabilities education. Students must complete the training program with a minimum average score of 70, calculated on the basis of written examinations, physical training and performance in field and classroom participation.

      Get certification as a conservator of peace. Once you successfully complete the prescribed training course, the training academy should issue the certification, authorized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
