How to Restore Scratched Chrome Wheels

Chrome paint will help restore scratched chrome rims.

Many wheels have chrome finish over the wheel hubcaps or rims for a shiny, polished look. Over time, this finish can scratch and wear off, leaving the car looking worn and beat-up. While replacing a true chrome finish is nearly impossible for home repair, it is possible to remove the current finish and spray chrome paint over the top surface of the wheel rims to refresh the chrome look and remove signs of scratches. Complete this restoration on a warm, sunny day for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wheel hubs with a detergent cleaner and a soft scrub brush. Rinse the area with water and dry with a soft cloth.

    • 2

Pour some paint thinner onto a soft cloth and rub over the entire wheel to remove any finish coating over the chrome.

    • 3

Coat the tire with masking tape and block the area under the rim to prevent the paint from getting onto the tire.

    • 4

Sand the wheel rim with 240-grit sandpaper. Wipe away residue with a soft cloth. Fill in any uneven areas with spot putty. Allow the putty to dry for 10 minutes. Sand the area with 400-grit sandpaper and wipe away any dust.

    • 5

Cover the car with a tarp. Spray the wheel with a metal primer. Allow the paint to dry 1 hour.

    • 6

Spray the wheel with the chrome paint. Allow the paint to dry for 4 hours. Spray a coating of clear lacquer over the paint to protect the finish from future scratches. Allow the paint to dry overnight before using the car.
