Place a follow-up phone call to check on your status after an interview.

You put everything you had into that job interview, and you thought you aced it. However, you have yet to hear back from the company after several days, and you have begun to wonder whether you really did ace the interview. You are not alone. Millions of interviewees feel the same way every year. If you just can’t wait to hear from the company regarding the position, you can do some subtle checking on the status of your application after the interview.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the interviewer at the close of your interview when you can expect to hear from the company with a decision. Make note of the date or time period you are given.

    • 2

Send a thank you note to the interviewer within two business days of your interview. This reminds the person of your interview as well as expressing appreciation for the opportunity to interview for the position. You might also take the opportunity to expand on your answers to any questions from the interview if you feel it is important.

    • 3

Call the person who interviewed you to check on the status of the position. However, wait at least a few days after the date you were given to do so, because time often gets away from people who are doing the hiring.

    • 4

If you leave a message and you don’t receive a return phone call feel free to leave a second message a few days later. If you still do not receive a return call it is time to move on. It is a clear indicator that the company is not interested in hiring you for the position.
