How to Remove a 14-Inch Rebar From Asphalt
Rebar is a type of reinforcing rod that is most often found in concrete. It comes in thicknesses of either 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch and ranges in length from 12 inches to 20 feet. When you are installing concrete, rebar is laid on the base to help strengthen it. Rebar is not generally used in common asphalt-related construction such as driveways. However, 14-inch rebar spikes are often installed in asphalt speed bumps. If you discover a piece of rebar protruding from your asphalt, you can remove it in the same way you would remove rebar from concrete. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Mark the area of the asphalt that contains the rebar, using white spray paint. Loosen the asphalt in that area with a sledgehammer. Continue to hammer directly on the asphalt until chunks begin to crack away from the rebar.
-
2
Pick up the larger pieces of asphalt and throw them aside. Continue hammering until the rebar is clearly exposed. Remove as much of the broken and loose asphalt as possible so it will be easier to remove the rebar. Ensure that the rebar is above the asphalt and can be pulled out with a stake puller.

3
Set a stake puller above the rebar on the asphalt. Position it so it is directly over top of the rebar that is protruding. Grip the rebar with the gripper on the end of the stake puller. Pull the trigger and turn on the gas-powered machine.
-
4
Push down firmly on the stake puller so it is gripping the rebar. Pull up on the stake puller until the rebar is out of the asphalt and fully exposed. Repeat the process for any other pieces of rebar you need to remove from the asphalt.
