How to Install Underground Pipe Without Digging

Underground pipework often needs to be installed without digging and trenching in locations where disturbance of the ground surface is undesirable. This is often the case in locations such as gardens, golf courses or driveways. Pipework can be installed by a number of methods, including directional drilling, pipe ramming, guided auger boring, and thrust bore and impact moling.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the location around where the bore will be inserted into the ground surface is clear from debris and personnel. Excavate exit and entry locations for the boring points if required.

    • 2

Switch on the directional bore machine to start the bore drill head spinning. The drill head must be angled appropriately to ensure the surface of the soil is breached.

    • 3

Steer the bore head through the desired location in the soil. Steering is accomplished by aligning the angle of the drill head motor to the desired direction. Ensure that as each joint of drill pipe is pushed into the ground, a new one is added behind.

    • 4

Steer the bore so that it emerges from the ground surface in the desired location.

    • 5

Remove the drill head from the end of the bored hole.

    • 6

Pump drill fluid down the hole which has been bored to provide lubrication for the pipework that will be inserted.

    • 7

Attach the pipework that is to be fitted within the ground to the drill head. Pass the bore through the bored hole with the rotating drill once more to ensure the pipework passes through the entire underground hole and emerges at the opposite end.
