DIY Vertical Banding When Printing

If you are doing graphics work, you will often have to create documents that have gradients in programs like Illustrator, Photoshop and CorelDraw. Gradients are a graphic element where one color gradually blends into another. They are often used as backgrounds for printed documents like posters and brochures. One problem that may arise when you are printing these documents is that the gradients will seem to produce a banding effect running vertically down the paper. Fortunately, there is usually a simple, if somewhat time and resource consuming, solution to this problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Test print the document with gradients and examine it for banding.

    • 2

Go to the printer settings for your document. Whatever the print resolution settings are, double them.

    • 3

Do another test print. If the document still has banding, repeat Step 2 and print again. Continue this process until the banding disappears. Then print all the copies you need.
