Instructions for Moen Thermostatic Valve Calibration
Properly functioning thermostatic valves are a must for all spas, showerheads and other temperature-related plumbing fixtures. Moen is a company that is dedicated to excellence in their product line, but even so, all of Moen’s products should still be carefully tested to determine that they are properly calibrated prior to regular use. Digital valves are known to be significantly easier to calibrate than standard, nondigital options. Although you can calibrate a Moen thermostatic valve prior to complete installation, only professionally licensed plumbers should perform such installations. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the supply lines to the thermostatic valve installation point and clear them of any type of debris. Supply lines can be cleaned by flushing them with water and using a plumbers snake to remove any dirt or clogs. Any dirt or other debris within the supply line could seriously damage the thermostatic valve, preventing it from properly functioning.

2
Make sure that you are using whatever plumbing sealant product is recommended for the particular valve type that you are installing; some suggest using plumber’s putty, but others require clear silicone sealant and Teflon tape.

3
Connect the supply lines to the Moen valve following the instructions in the installation specifications to connect the proper line to the proper input. Then, calibrate the unit. To do this, turn the hot water to the point where the water flow should be about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Using an outside thermometer, test the water temperature at this point.
-
4
Adjust the calibration if necessary. Adjusting is necessary when your thermometer does not read 100 F. To adjust the calibration, turn off the water, and completely remove both the white plastic stop and temperature control handle on the thermostatic valve.Turn on the water again, and adjust the valve stem until a point is reached where the water temperature does actually measure 100 F.
-
5
Reinstall the removed plastic stop onto the front of the thermostatic valve. Align the red dot on the valve with the 12 o’clock position while also aligning the red button with the temperature control handle. This should result in the water temperature measuring 100 F at the point where all the red buttons/dots align when adjusted to that point by the temperature control handle.
