DIY Pipe-and-Drape Backdrop

DIY Pipe-and-Drape Backdrop thumbnail
PVC pipe makes an excellent pipe-and-drape backdrop.

A pipe-and-drape backdrop can be a simple way to hang a background for photography or for decoration. Fabrics are easily hung on the pipe backdrop stand by draping them over. For a more polished look, attach a fabric to the system by folding it over the top rail and hot-gluing it or sewing Velcro fasteners to the fabric for easy placement and removal. You can find all of the supplies you need to construct your pipe-and-drape backdrop at most hardware stores and general stores. The actual construction of the pipe-and-drape system will take most people less than an hour; however, you will be working with quick-drying concrete, which will need to dry overnight before use.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 PVC pipes, 1 inch by 7 feet
  • 1 PVC pipe, 1 inch by 5 feet
  • 2 PVC “T” joints, 1 inch
  • 2 PVC elbows, 1 inch
  • 2 planters or buckets, 12 inch
  • 1 bag quick-drying concrete

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one elbow to an end on each of the 7-foot sections of PVC pipe. Connect the two 7-foot sections by inserting an end of the 5-foot pipe into the open ends of the elbow that are connected to the longer pieces. This should now resemble the shape of a “U.”

    • 2

Connect a PVC T-joint on both ends of the U-shaped pipe backdrop frame. The T-joints will help hold the frame in place when set up; this is an important step.

    • 3

Insert each of the T-joint ends into its own bucket. Have an assistant hold the frame up for you if necessary. Move the PVC pipes so they are in the center of the bucket. Cover and secure the T-joints by filling the buckets with unmixed quick-drying concrete.

    • 4

Water the buckets of quick-drying concrete as directed by the package instructions. On most brands of quick-drying concrete, you will need to water it until the water forms a puddle on top, then allow it to sit 10 minutes before adding more water. Allow the concrete to dry overnight or as directed by the package instructions.

    • 5

Drape a length of fabric over the pipe-and-drape backdrop stand to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • This builds a 7-foot-tall by 5-foot-wide backdrop stand. The measurements can be altered to suit your specifications.

  • For larger pipe-and-drape backdrops, use a larger bucket and more concrete.
