How to Secure Plywood to a Brick Wall

Masonry walls require special fasteners.

Brick can be a difficult material to fasten items to. The rough surface does not hold adhesives well, and the masonry material is difficult to penetrate with regular nails. To secure a piece of plywood, or any material or fixture, to a brick wall, a sleeve anchor is necessary. A hammer drill will drill through the tough brick material, and the sleeve anchor will hold the plywood securely against the wall.

Things You'll Need

• Hammer drill
• Drill bit
• Wire brush
• Sleeve anchor
• Hammer
• Wrench

Instructions

1. Add the thickness of the plywood to the embedment depth required by the sleeve anchor. The result is the required length for the sleeve anchors that you will need.

2. Attach a drill bit to a hammer drill. Use a bit that is the same diameter as the sleeve anchor. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the bit at the depth you want to drill. Set the drill to hammer mode.

3. Drill a pilot hole in the brick to the masking tape on the bit. Drill a hole through the plywood at the spot where you want to attach the fastener. Insert a wire brush into the brick hole to remove the dust.

4. Hold the plywood up to the brick wall so the holes are even. Insert a sleeve anchor through the plywood hole and into the brick. Tap it gently with a hammer to make sure it is in completely.

5. Tighten the nut on the sleeve anchor with a wrench. Turn it three to four times. Repeat with each piece of plywood.
