How to Troubleshoot Rooftop Package Units

How to Troubleshoot Rooftop Package Units thumbnail
There are steps you can take to fix your rooftop air conditioning unit.

Rooftop package units are air conditioning systems designed for use outside, which eliminate the hassle of installation and running. After all, these units are completely assembled at the factory and are equipped with all the relevant piping, refrigerant charge and electrical wiring. All the user needs to do is make sure there are appropriate connections for ducts, electric, fuel source and condensate drain at the site. It sounds simple enough, yet when you factor in issues such as weather fatigue, loose seals and clogged drains, there are still troubleshooting steps that may need to be taken if something's not working properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check the structural integrity of the unit and the security of all the vital connections. You should be particularly conscious that there must be a return air duct coming from the building to the rooftop packaged unit, and the duct must be sealed. Visually inspect the unit to make sure there is no loose duct tape.

    • 2

Clean the filters if necessary. The unit should have been cleaned following final construction clean up, but you can remove the side panels to check for yourself. Dirty or blocked air filters must be replaced or the unit will not operate properly.

    • 3

Clean up any dirt or debris that may have built up to such an extent that it could affect operation. This includes clearing leaves and snow or any ice build-ups -- always a danger with units which are stored outside.

    • 4

Visually inspect the the condensate drain to ensure it is routed to a suitable drain, and is not blocked. Clear the drain of any blockages, if necessary.
