How to Change a Ceramic Cook Top on a Whirlpool Range

Whirlpool electric ranges are available with a metal coil or ceramic cook top. Ceramic cook tops have a glass panel and are completely flat. When cool to the touch, these cook tops provide you with additional counter space on which to place both hot and cold items and increase the cosmetic appeal of your kitchen. However, the cook top will break if a heavy object is dropped on it, making the entire range unsafe for use until the cook top is replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range from the wall outlet or turn off the breaker to the kitchen at your home's main breaker panel.

    • 2

Open the oven door and remove the screws from under the front lip of the cook top with a screwdriver. Close the oven door.

    • 3

Lift the cook top and have an assistant hold it up so that you can access the burners. If you are repairing the range alone, place a sturdy object under the cook top to elevate it.

    • 4

Remove the screws that secure the burners' cross-braces to the underside of the cook top.

    • 5

Lift the cook top up and off of the range. Transfer the brackets on the underside of the old cook top to the new one if the brackets are not included with the new top. The brackets are secured with standard screws.

    • 6

Place the new cook top onto the range then elevate it with either the help of your assistant or a heavy object.

    • 7

Reinstall the burners' cross-braces with the screws that were previously removed.

    • 8

Lower the cook top then open the oven door and replace the screws that were removed.

    • 9

Close the oven door then restore power to the range.
